Tompkins County is located in the west central part of New York State.  Named after Daniel D. Tompkins, who served as Governor of New York State and later as Vice President of the United States, the county occupies 492 square miles. Tompkins County is bordered by Cayuga County to the north, Seneca County to the northwest, Chemung County to the southwest, Tioga County to the south, Schuyler County to the west, and Cortland County to the east. It has a population of approximately 103,000. The county seat is in Ithaca.

Tompkins County is home to Cornell University and Ithaca College.  It also is known for its numerous waterfalls and state parks such as the Buttermilk Falls State Park, The Taughannock Falls State Park, the Robert H. Treman State Park, and Ithaca Falls. The Cornell Botanic Gardens is a popular attraction as well.
