Schuyler County is located in western New York State. The county occupies a total area of 342 square miles. Schuyler County is the second least populated county in New York State with a population of approximately 18,000. The county was originally part of Albany County, an enormous county that encompassed all of the northern part of New York State and the whole state of Vermont. Over the years, Albany County was divided and sectioned off to form new counties. On April 17, 1854 present day Schuyler County was formed through the combining of portions of Steuben, Chemung and Tompkins counties.
Schuyler County is bordered by Tompkins County to the east, Seneca County to the north, Chemung County to the south, Steuben County to the west and Yates county to the northwest.
