Rockland County is located 6 miles from New York City at its closest point. The name is derived from “Rocky Land“ which refers to the rocky terrain and the Hudson River Palisades. Rockland County is bordered by Putnam County to the northeast, Orange County to the northwest, and Westchester County to the east. Rockland County is the smallest county in New York State. It occupies a total area of 199.34 square miles with a population of approximately 326,000, making it the third most densely populated county in New York State outside of New York City. It also ranks among the highest median income per capita in New York State. 

Close to one third of the county is designated as park area.
