Rensselaer County is located just east of Albany County. Rensselaer County covers an area of 665 square miles with a population of approximately 159,000. Rensselaer County is bordered by Washington County to the north, Columbia County to the south, Albany County to the west, Saratoga County to the northwest, Green County to the southwest, Massachusetts to the east, and Vermont to the northeast. 

The area which was inhabited by the Mohican Indian Tribe at the time of the European arrival. In 1630, Kiliaen Van Rensselaer, a wealthy Dutch jeweler and merchant purchased the area. Kiliaen Van Rensselaer was a director of the Dutch West India Company, a company he helped found. Initially he purchased land from the Algonquin Indians by the Hudson River near Albany. He later made additional purchases expanding the area to approximately 700,000 acres covering both sides of the Hudson River.

Popular attractions in Rensselaer County include the Children’s Museum of Science, Crailo State Historic Site, Grafton Lake State Park, Berlin Mountain, The Burden Iron Works Museum, and the Pineridge Cross Country Ski Area.
