Onondaga County is located close to the center of New York State. It is located west of Utica, east of Rochester and north of Ithaca.   The northern part of the county is particularly level lake plain including Oneida Lake, Erie and Barge Canals. Meanwhile, the southern part of Onondaga county is the Appalachian Plateau, which inhabits the eastern part of the Finger Lakes region.

Founded in 1794 the county was named after the Onondaga Indian Tribe. The Onondaga Indians lived in the area at the time of the European arrival. The county covers an area of 778 square miles. Onondaga county has a population of approximately 460,500. The county seat is Syracuse.
