Monroe County is located in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State along Lake Ontario. The northern county line is both a state border and also part of the United States border. Monroe County covers an area of 1667 square miles, however more than half that area, 710 square miles, is under water. Monroe County has a population of approximately 735,000. Monroe County is bordered by Canada to the north, Livingston County to the south, Wayne County to the east, Orleans County to the west, Genesee County to the southwest, and Ontario County to the Southeast.

Originally part of Albany County, Monroe County was established in 1821 when it was split from Ontario County. Over the last 20 years the economy of Monroe County has shifted toward high technology. Today Monroe County is home to a number of international corporations including Eastman Kodak, Xerox, Paychex, and Pictomety.

Popular attractions include the George Eastman Museum, Highland Park, Susan B. Anthony Museum and House, The Memorial Art Gallery and the Rochester Museum and Science Center.
