Madison County is located in the center of New York State approximately 22 miles east of Syracuse. Once part of Albany County, when Albany County encompassed an enormous amount of upstate New York. The area which is present day Madison County, was inhabited by American Indians for thousands of years and later inhabited by the Iroquoian speaking Indians known as the Oneida Nation, in the  fourteenth century.  The present borders of Madison County were established in 1806 when it was sectioned off Chenango County. Madison County has a population of approximately 71,000. Madison County is bordered by Oneida County to the north, Chenango County to the south, Otsego County to the east, Cortland County to the southwest, and Oswego County to the northwest.

Popular attractions include the Wild Animal Park, the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Owera Vineyards, Point Place Casino, and the Chittenango Falls State Park.
