Greene County, NY is nestled in the Catskill Mountains just south of Albany County, about 130 miles north of New York City. Named after the American Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene, the county was established in 1800 through the partitioning of land from Albany County and Ulster County. Over the years there were a number of adjustments to the boundaries of Greene County, some of which increased its size, and others that decreased the size. On March 3, 1836, the final adjustment to the boundaries was made when Green County lost thirty square miles to Schoharie County, resulting in what is present day Greene County. Today Greene County covers an area of approximately 660 square miles with a population of approximately 47,424. Neighboring counties include Albany County to the north, Rensselaer County to the northeast, Schoharie County to the northwest, Ulster County to the south, and Delaware County to the west.
Greene County is home to the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort, Kaaterskill Falls, the Thomas Cole National Historic Site, the Zoom Flume Water Park and many state and county parks and wildlife areas.
