Dutchess County is located in southern New York State approximately 63 miles north of New York City. The county was created by the colonial assembly in 1683 as one of the 12 original counties of New York State. It was named in honor of Mary of Modena, then Duchess of York and wife of the future King James II of England. Dutchess County is bordered by Columbia Count to the north, Putnam County to the south, Ulster County to the west, Orange County to the southwest, Massachusetts to the northeast and Connecticut to the east.
