Established in 1786, Columbia County is located on the eastern side of New York State on the border of both Connecticut and Massachusetts. Columbia County occupies 648 square miles square miles and has a population of approximately 59,461. Columbia County’s name is derived from the Latin word for Christopher Columbus, which at that time was being considered as the new name for the United States. The first European explorer to visit Columbia County was Henry Hudson in 1609 when an incident forced him to stop and search for food and supplies. The county seat is Hudson.
