Cayuga County is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, with a small portion of the county extending north to Lake Ontario. The county was created in 1799 from land sectioned off from Onondaga County. The County was substantially larger at that time as it included territory that would later become Seneca and Tompkins County. Cayuga County was named after the Cayuga Indians, one of the tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy. The county occupies a total area of 864 square miles square miles however 172 square miles (20 percent), is under water. The population of Cayuga County is approximately 76,576. The county seat is Auburn.
