Broome County is located in south central New York State on the Pennsylvania border. The county was founded in 1806 from land partitioned off from Tioga County. The county was named after John Broome, a merchant and politician who served as Lieutenant Governor of New York State from 1804 to 1810. The county occupies a total area of 715.52 square miles. The population of Broome County is approximately 190,488. The county is home to Binghamton University, one of four university centers that form part of the New York State University System. The county seat or administration center is Binghamton.
