Yates County is located in western New York State, in the finger Lakes region. Established in 1683, it is the third populous county in New York. At one time, Yates County was part of Albany County which at one time contained the northern part of New York and all of the state of Vermont. From 1766 to 1946 Yates County underwent a series of changes. The final adjustment occurred on April 18, 2946 when Yates county acquired 10 square miles from Schuyler and Seneca counties, resulting in the current borders of Yates County. 

Yates County is bordered by Ontario, Seneca, Schuyler, and Steuben Counties. The county seat is in Penn Yan. Keuka College and Penn Yan Airport are located in Yates County.
