About Ulster County, New York:

Ulster County is located on the southeast section of New York State. Dutch traders originally referred to the area as Esopus after the Esopus Indians. In 1683 the county was formally founded and named Ulster County after the Ulster Province in Ireland. The county borders underwent a number of changes over the years as much of the original Ulster County was split off to form Delaware, Orange County, Rockland County, Green County, and finally in 1809, to form Sullivan County. Today Ulster County is surrounded by Orange County to the south, Sullivan County to the west, Delaware and Green Counties to the north, and Columbia and Dutchess Counties to the east. Today Ulster County maintains an area of approximately 1161 square miles. 

Today Ulster County is a major vacation destination for many New Yorkers residing throughout New York State. Popular vacation attractions include the Catskill Mountains, Catskill Park, Minnewaska State Park, Shawangunk Mountains, Hudson River and the Shawangunk Ridge. Popular activities include hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, bicycling, rock climbing, skiing, hunting, and fishing. The Ulster County fair, referred to as “ the best six days of summer” is held annually in New Paltz.
