About Sullivan County, New York:

Sullivan County is located in the southern portion of upstate New York approximately 100 miles north of New York City. Named after the American Revolutionary hero Major General John Sullivan, Sullivan County is part of the Borscht Belt which housed numerous summer resorts. Sullivan County is bordered by Pennsylvania to the west, Orange County to the south, Delaware County to the north, and Ulster County to the east. Sullivan County has a population of approximately 75,000.

Sullivan County has been a popular vacation spot since the 1800’s featuring mountain climbing, boating, and numerous other outdoor activities. As part of the Borscht Belt, Sullivan County maintained hundreds of resort complexes during its heyday from the 1920’s to the 1980’s. The resorts encompassed golf courses, social events and entertainers, and was frequented primarily by middle class and working class Jewish families from New York City mostly during the summer months. Many famous comedians tested their material and performed regularly at Borscht Belt hotels, including Henny Youngman, Mel Brooks, and Eddie Fisher performed often at the legendary resort of Grossinger's, where in 1955 he married Debbie Reynolds. In 1969 Sullivan County was the site of the Woodstock Festival attended by approximately 500,000 people. Ironically the Woodstock festival/ concert actually took place on Max Yasgur’s farm in the town of Bethel,  not in Woodstock, NY because the local officials had rescinded the original permit just prior to the concert. Entertainers that performed at Woodstock included Jimi Hendrix, Arlo Guthrie, Santana, The Who, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the Grateful Dead, The Band, Canned Heat, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez Sly and the Family Stone, Blood, Sweat and Tears; Jefferson Airplane, and Richie Havens. Today the site is the home to the Bethel woods Center for the Arts. Sullivan County is also the home to the Monticello Racetrack.

The capital seat of Sullivan County is Monticello.
