About Putnam County, New York

Putnam County is located about an hour drive north of New York City. Putnam County covers an area of 256 square miles with a population of approximately 99,000. Putnam County is surrounded by Dutchess County to the north, Westchester County to the south, Connecticut to the east, Orange County to the west, and Rockland County to the southwest.

Putnam County was established in 1812 when it was sectioned off from Dutchess County. It was named after Israel Putnam, a French and Indian War hero, and later a general in the American Revolution. Putnam County is recognized as one of the most affluent counties in the United States, ranking 21^st in median household income. The median house sale price in 2020 was $394,250.

Putnam County is known for Manitoga, the modernist home and estate of industrial designer Russel Wright, The Magazzino Italian Art Museum and Research Center, Boscobel House and Gardens, Breakneck Ridge, Clarence Fahnestock State Park, Thunder Ridge Ski Area and the Hudson Highlands State Park.
