Genesee County is located in the western portion of New York State. Archaeological records show that the area was inhabited by the indigenous population as far back as 10,000 – 12,000 years ago Archaeologists at the Hiscock site in Byron have uncovered a significant number of artifacts including man made tools, ceramics, a mastodon jaw, tusks and teeth. The Hiscock site is considered one of the most important sites for Ice Age archaeological artifacts in North America.

Genesee County is home to the Batavia Downs Racetrack and Casino, Six Flags Darien Lake Theme Park, Batavia Peace Gardens, the Holland Land Office Museum, Stafford Museum of History, the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge and numerous state and county parks.
