Albany County is located north of New York City nearly midway between New York City and Canada. It extends southward and westward from the point where the Mohawk River joins the Hudson River. Named after the Duke of Albany, who later became James II of England, the county occupies 530 square miles. Albany County is surrounded by Greene, Schoharie, Schenectady, Saratoga Rensselaer, and Columbia Counties. It has a population of approximately 303,000.
